Daruma Art @ Nikkei National Museum

From folk art to custom creations – the Nikkei National Museum is pleased to present 100 artist-designed daruma for a special show and silent auction.

This is the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre’s 6th annual Bloom Art Auction. Visitors have the opportunity to bid on these beautifully creative daruma, with all the proceeds supporting quality museum exhibits, programs, education and special events related to Japanese Canadian history, culture and art.  Hosted by CBC’s Margaret Gallagher, the event will be held on Saturday, May 24 from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at the Nikkei Centre.

Daruma, a popular talisman of good luck in Japan, traces back to the origin of Zen in the 5th century.  These simple tumbling dolls are armless, legless, and are made out of papier maché with a weighted bottom to always stand upright even if pushed down, symbolic of perseverance and fortitude. Classic daruma are eyeless and are considered to be good luck in achieving goals. One eye is painted in upon setting the goal, and the second eye is painted in once the goal has been accomplished.

The museum has invited artists  to design creative daruma using whatever colours and mediums they choose. This is an opportunity for artists to showcase their style and work to the community. The results are sure to be stunning and will cast a fresh eye on this traditional Japanese doll!

The daruma will be on display in the gallery from May 10 to May 24, as well as can be previewed online here soon.

In addition to the daruma dolls, the event will feature canapés by Butter on the Endive and Open Sesame, a cash bar, live entertainment, and a raffle draw. Tickets are only $25 plus tax, or $20 plus tax for NNMCC members.
