This is an opportunity to view some remarkable and seldom seen images from an intriguing new book called Finding Japan - Early Canadian Encounters with Asia.
In contrast to the story of Japanese immigration to Canada, Finding Japan looks in the opposite direction to early Canadian engagement westward across the Pacific – when it began, who went and why. Seen through the eyes of a colourful cast of characters, the book opens a window on the tumultuous period in Canadian, Japanese and Pacific history between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries – with some surprises.
The author, Anne Shannon, will present the images followed by discussion. Admission free. Books will be available for purchase.
