Celebrate spring in style with our annual spring festival "O Hanami | お花見"!

April 3 & 4 at Nikkei Centre

The annual spring festival, O Hanami, is a family-friendly celebration of both spring and Japanese culture at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre.

O Hanami is the Japanese tradition of welcoming spring and enjoying the transient beauty of cherry flowers. This annual celebration at the Nikkei Centre is all about appreciating the beauty of nature and having fun!

Festival highlights include Japanese dance, Taiko performances, martial arts demonstrations, Japanese cultural art displays, workshops, tea ceremony, children’s activities, kimono dressing, and a variety of Japanese cuisine and shops!

Weekend passes are available online. Please bring your smartphone with your ticket barcode/QR code to the event.

One day admission tickets are only sold at the door on each Friday and Saturday.

👘Admission is free for visitors wearing kimonos. Saturday only!

Dahaza Performance

Experience Japanese instrumental music from Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos, Anny Lin, John Nguyen, and Nori Akagi with a modern twist as well as an energetic performance by Dahaza!

Kotoba Forest Secret Lounge

The local art group presents a unique lounge space. A lounge where words are intertwined, music floats and all your senses mingle through the ambience and yourself. Presented by Soramaru, Yurie, Steve, Kishu and Yasuko

A range of performances/demonstrations will be on offer: taiko, traditional Japanese dance and various martial arts. Program/Schedule will be posted on our website. There will also be Japanese food vendors and shops. Please check our website for the list of vendors.

 

Tea Ceremony, ICHIGO ICHIE | 一期一会

The popular tea ceremony at the O Hanami, ICHIGO ICHIE is coming back! Come and enjoy the art of tea, ICHIGO ICHIE | 一期一会 at the Nikkei Centre during the O Hanami event and celebrate the beauty of Japanese culture! ICHIGO ICHIE | 一期一会, a cultural concept meaning the treasuring of the unrepeatable nature of a moment, will be performed by the Urasenke Chado Club with grace and beauty.

As the tea ceremony unfolds, you will be served the highest quality matcha tea, along with traditional Japanese sweets.

Ceremony Times: 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm

Advanced Tickets: $8 General non-members | $6 NNMCC members - Please present your membership card at the tea ceremony reception.
At the Door: $10 General non-members | $8 NNMCC members - Limited tickets are available at the door on the day of the event.

Kimono Dressing

A kimono is a traditional and elegant garment from Japan. To fully immerse yourself in the experience, try on a kimono during O Hanami! You will wear a kimono chosen and dressed by experts from Satsuki-kai.

Displays

Beautiful Bonsai trees will be on display, offering an exceptional opportunity to view the wide variety of trees cared for by members of the Nikkei Bonsai Society. Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, will be presented by Kado-Sumi Ikenaba. 

There will also be some beautiful Japanese calligraphy, Shodo, created by Issei-kai instructor, Fusako Fujiki and for the first time at the O Hanami, there will be Origami creations that will be displayed. The Origami creations will be presented by PALM (Paperfolders Around the Lower Mainland).

All are welcomed to enjoy the Japanese art on display on both days throughout the centre during the O Hanami!

 

Nikkei Museum
Find out about and explore the exhibit, "Nikkei" and enjoy shopping at the museum shop during the event! Open on Friday and Saturday.
