A Japanese Tea Ceremony with Hinamatsuri Dolls

Tranquility and Tradition: Experience the Japanese Tea Ceremony

Presented by the Urasenke Tankokai Vancouver Association in the Ellipse Lobby, this event offers a chance to experience chanoyu while enjoying the seasonal display of Hinamatsuri dolls.

From February 13th to March 1st, the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre will showcase Hina dolls, a custom for celebrating girls' health and happiness. These dolls, representing the Imperial Court, are displayed leading up to Hinamatsuri (Doll's Day, March 3). Their presence adds a cultural dimension to the tea ceremony.

The Japanese Tea Ceremony is a practice that emphasizes harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. It is a ritual involving the preparation and presentation of matcha, a powdered green tea. The ceremony engages sight, smell, taste, and touch. The movements of the practitioners, the utensils, and the atmosphere contribute to a sense of peace.

On March 1st, ticket holders will be served matcha and okashi (Japanese sweets). The okashi are chosen to complement the matcha and suit the season and occasion. This is a chance to taste Japanese tea and sweets and learn about the tea ceremony. Practitioners will answer questions and share their knowledge. This event provides an opportunity to experience the Japanese Tea Ceremony within the context of the Hinamatsuri doll display. While the doll display is open to all visitors, tickets are required for the tea ceremony and include matcha and okashi.
