This tea set was donated to the Nikkei National Museum in 2021 by the descendants of a non-Nikkei family from Vancouver’s Marpole neighbourhood. They believed it once belonged to a Japanese Canadian family who lived in the area before their forced removal from coastal British Columbia in 1942 during the Second World War.

Hoping to return it to its rightful owners, the donors found no identifying information. The set arrived to the museum broken, but under the skilled hands of Naoko Fukumaru, it has been carefully restored.

Now part of our permanent collection, this tea set is a poignant reminder of a painful past, and a symbol of resilience, memory, and cultural connection. It reflects our ongoing mission to honour, preserve, and share Japanese Canadian history and heritage.

Beautifully Broken – Kintsugi by Naoko Fukumaru

この茶道具は、バンクーバー、マーポール出身の非日系人から2021年に日系博物館に寄付された。おそらく第二次大戦中の1942年にブリティッシュ・コロンビア州の海岸地域から強制移動させられる前にマーポールに住んでいた日系人が持っていた物だろうとのことだった。

寄付者の方は持ち主の元に戻したかったが、持ち主を特定する情報はみつからなかった。茶道具は壊れた状態で博物館に届き、福丸直子の熟練の腕で修復された。

現在は博物館コレクションとして管理され、つらい過去の記憶を思い出させるものであると同時に、立ち直る力、記憶、文化的つながりのシンボルでもある。そして日系カナダ人の歴史と遺産を尊び、保存し、共有するという日系博物館の使命を反映している。
