Reflections on Oshōgatsu Japanese New Year Celebrations

The spirit of renewal was felt by all on January 3, as our community came together for Oshōgatsu celebrations. We were thrilled to welcome 1,800 guests to experience Japan’s cherished new year traditions, as well as introduce many programs we offer throughout the year.

Event Highlights

  • Cultural Arts: Guests of all ages tried their hand at Kakizome, the traditional first calligraphy of the year, brushing their 2026 resolutions onto paper.
  • Traditional Games: The atmosphere was a blend of focused quiet and joyful excitement during rounds of Karuta, Shogi, Igo, and Hanafuda (locally called gaji).
  • Live Performance: A highlight of the afternoon was the Shishimai (Lion Dance) by Rakuichi, performed to ward off evil spirits and invite good luck for the year ahead.
  • Food & Drink: Attendees enjoyed a variety of food, including Onigiri and Miso Soup, warm Oden and Manju from Yama Cafe, and Okinawan Noodles by Tatchan Noodle. Sen Sakamoto of Kintoki Sweets also provided Amazake demonstrations, offering guests a taste of the traditional fermented rice drink.

Partners and Supporters

An event of this scale would not be possible without the dedication of our community. We would like to extend our gratitude to our partners, whose expertise brought these traditions to life:

  • Gladstone Japanese Language School
  • Igo Club
  • Rakuichi Mikoshi Canada
  • Tonari Gumi
  • Vancouver Japanese Gardeners’ Association
  • Vancouver Shogi Club
  • Wailele Wai Wai (who led a Hula workshop for our guests)

We also wish to thank our supporters, Modo and Samurice, for their contributions toward making this event a reality.

Looking Ahead

Throughout the month of March, we will be presenting Taste of Japan x Bite of Burnaby, a series of food programs showcasing Japanese cuisine. We hope to see you there.
