Step into the captivating world of sake! This experience promises to elevate your appreciation for this extraordinary beverage. Join us for an engaging talk by an expert speaker who will unveil the rich cultural heritage behind sake. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to connect directly with individual sake producers/importers—get ready to uncover the unique flavours that make each sake special!

 

Live Performances

Experience the vibrant culture of Japan through captivating live performances. Immerse yourself in the art of sword performance and marvel at the stunning kimono show, where traditional attire meets Japanese sake tradition.

5:15PM   Taiko Performance by GO Taiko

GO Taiko is only the second youth Taiko group in British Columbia. They began offering free after-school taiko lessons in Vancouver. The group has performed at numerous events, including the PNE Fair, Powell Street Festival, BC Lions Halftime Show, and Nikkei Matsuri. GO Taiko aims to promote Japanese culture through the powerful art of drumming.

7:00PM  Samurai sword performance 剱伎道 by Uchida Brothers

KENGIDO combines traditional Samurai sword training (Kenjutsu) with Japanese stage performance. Founded by Tetsuro Shimaguchi, known for "Kill Bill," it showcases swordplay's elegance through theatricality. Yusei, the youngest instructor, started training at eight and has performed globally with KAMUI. His brother, Shosei, will join him, captivating audiences with their martial arts and artistry blend!

8:30PM   Kimono Performance

Experience a breathtaking kimono wedding showcasing the craftsmanship of Fumiko Horan's team and Japan's rich cultural traditions. Meet the SHOGUN cast: Yuki Kedoin as Takemaru and Haruno Niiyama as Natsu no Kata bring tradition to life on stage in an unforgettable celebratory performance!

Hands-on Workshops (registration required)

Experience the serenity of Japanese aesthetics as you create your own Rock Garden (枯山水) with the expert guidance of the Vancouver Japanese Gardeners Association. This hands-on workshop will teach you the principles of balance and harmony in garden design, or try making your own Mini-Bonsai (盆栽), meticulously presented by landscaper Seiji Nakayama. Each piece reflects the beauty of nature, allowing you to bring a slice of zen into your home. Don’t miss this opportunity to create and connect with traditional Japanese gardening!

Gallery Tours (free, registration encouraged)

Discover the history of the first Japanese immigrants to Canada and the thriving Japanese Canadian communities in British Columbia with a special guided tour, "Taiken: Generations of Resilience." and be among the first to visit our newest exhibit, "Haq and History."
