Japanese Canadian Contributions to Steveston/Richmond
February 6, 2024- Closing March 2 March 9, 2024
In honour of Asian Heritage Month 2023, Kelvin Higo and the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre Advisory Committee (SJCCCAC), with the graphic support of Miki Miyano, compiled this photo display for Richmond City Hall capturing 100+ years of Japanese Canadian contributions to Richmond, BC.
16 panels with photographs of built structures and public spaces spanning 123 years, show, for example, how the Japanese Canadian community of Steveston was the first to build a permanent hospital that provided relief to communities of colour when racial segregation was real and a public school that was open to all in Steveston/Richmond.
Funded by the SJCCCAC, these panels intend to promote and preserve the customs, traditions, and history of the Japanese Canadian community in Steveston/Richmond.
