Haq and History

The Punjabi Canadian Legacy Project: A quest for community voices

October 19, 2024 – January 25, 2025

Opening Reception: November 2, 1-3 PM, 2024

The Haq and History exhibition, originally developed by the South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) and the Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM) in 2020 offers visitors the chance to reflect upon stories from and about South Asian Canadian immigrants, including details about work, home life, and keeping cultural traditions alive in BC.

As part of the travelling exhibit opportunity, SASI invited all receiving institutions to apply for research assistance to help unearth connections of our local history and South Asian Canadians, to offer visitors a chance to learn not only about the lives of South Asian Canadians in our area, but also to add to the content of the core exhibit to help deepen our collective knowledge exponentially. Tiffany Lau, from SFU’s Academy to Community program researched the intersection of South Asian and Japanese Canadian communities for Nikkei content in this exhibit which centers around the Toyota, Urabe, and Yano families in Paldi on Vancouver Island.

We are honoured to host Haq and History and grateful for the support from SASI and RBCM.
