Haq and History: The Punjabi Canadian Legacy Project Now Open

Discover the Rich History of Punjabi Canadians in British Columbia

We’re pleased to announce the opening of the Haq and History exhibition at the Nikkei National Museum on October 19, 2024. This exhibit, developed by the South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) and the Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM), explores the lives, experiences, and contributions of Punjabi Canadian immigrants in British Columbia.

Challenges and triumphs of pioneering communities

Haq and History offers visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of Punjabi Canadian history. Discover stories about work, home life, and the preservation of cultural traditions.

The intersection with Japanese Canadians

As part of the travelling exhibit program, SASI invited institutions to participate in research projects that would uncover the unique connections between Punjabi Canadians and their surrounding communities. Tiffany Lau from SFU’s Academy to Community program conducted research on the intersection of South Asian and Japanese Canadian communities, focusing on the Toyota, Urabe, and Yano families in Paldi on Vancouver Island. This recent research has been incorporated into the exhibit.
