On a beautiful, sunny July 4th, we were thrilled to welcome over 1,800 visitors to the Nikkei Garden Market—even with Canada competing in the World Cup! As one of our largest markets to date, the event hosted 97 vendors spanning the Hayashi Hall, lobby, and Nikkei Garden. Attendees enjoyed a fantastic variety of goods, including handmade crafts, Japanese bakeries, specialty teas, mouth-watering food options, and even gourmet dog treats. NNMCC Auxiliary members sold donated plants as well as their delicious signature creation: dorayaki ice cream. Adding to the festive spirit, many came dressed in beautiful yukata to dance Bon Odori in the garden and hang their wishes on our Tanabata decorations. It was heartwarming to see the community gather to support local makers and small businesses. A huge thank you to our amazing vendors, dedicated volunteers, and everyone who stopped by. You make these events truly special!
Meanwhile, don’t miss Return to Paueru Gai: 50 Years of Powell Street Festival, running until September 6 at the 1F Karasawa Gallery. Curated by Emiko Morita, this retrospective exhibition features photographs, archival video, and art installations celebrating half a century of Japanese Canadian art, culture, and activism. Admission is by donation.
Finally, save the date for our biggest celebration of the year! The annual Nikkei Matsuri returns with the Zenyasai outdoor dance party on Friday, September 4, and the main festivities on Saturday & Sunday, September 5 & 6. 快晴に恵まれた7月4日、ワールドカップのカナダ戦で街が沸く中、「日系ガーデンマーケット」に約1,800人もの来場者をお迎えすることができました。今回は過去最大規模のマーケットの一つとなり、林ホール、ロビー、日系ガーデンに97もの出店者が集結しました。会場には、手作りクラフトや日本のパン、こだわりの茶葉、食欲をそそるフードからペット用のおやつまで、多彩なブースが並びました。また、日系センター活動補助グループ（Auxiliary）のメンバーによる植木市や、特製どら焼きアイスも大好評でした。 多くの来場者が色鮮やかな浴衣姿で日系ガーデンでの盆踊りを楽しみ、願い事を書いた短冊を七夕の飾りに吊るすなど、会場は華やかなお祭りムードに包まれました。 地域の皆様が集まり、地元のクリエイターやスモールビジネスを温かく応援してくださる姿は、本当に素晴らしいものでした。出店者の皆様、ボランティアの方々、足を運んでくださったすべての方に心より感謝申し上げます。皆様のおかげで、特別な一日となりました。
また、1階のカラサワ・ギャラリーで開催中の「Return to Paueru Gai：パウエル祭の50年」展（9月6日まで）もお見逃しなく。エミコ・モリタ氏がキュレーターを務めるこの展覧会では、写真、映像、アートインスタレーションを通じて、半世紀に及ぶ日系カナダ人の芸術、文化、そしてアクティビズムの軌跡を振り返ります（入場は寄付制）。
さらに、今年最大のイベント「日系祭り」が9月4日（金・前夜祭）、5日（土）、6日（日）に開催されます！屋台、お神輿、盆踊り、音楽など、誰もが楽しめる活気あふれる週末をお届けします。前売り券は現在好評発売中。18歳未満のお子様、65歳以上のシニア、および日系センター会員は入場無料。詳細は NIKKEIMATSURI.CA をご覧ください。
