Nikkei Matsuri 2025

Join us for Nikkei Matsuri, an authentic celebration of Japanese culture! This year is extra special as we mark the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre's (NNMCC) 25th anniversary.

When: Saturday, August 30 & Sunday, August 31, 11 AM - 7 PM daily (Labour Day Weekend)

Experience the Festival Highlights:

  • Japanese Culture & Traditions: Witness the lively Mikoshi procession and participate in the Bon Odori dance around the festival Yagura tower. Yukata (summer kimono) rentals are available for an authentic experience!
  • Captivating Stage Performances: Get ready to be entertained by local performers showcasing taiko drumming, a dynamic samurai show, traditional Japanese dance, as well as an idol unit and impressive martial arts demonstrations.
  • Special Guests from Japan: Don't miss WA Studio KIWA, a kimono upcycling designer, who will present a unique stage performance of their one-of-a-kind art dress woven from 1000 wishes.
  • Fun for the whole Family: Young attendees will love festival games like yo-yo balloon fishing, super ball scooping, and balloon darts, all with fun prizes. Kids can also get creative with hands-on origami, watercolour calligraphy, and face painting. Plus, relax and connect at our Intergenerational Lounge.
  • Delicious Food & Beverages: Satisfy your cravings with authentic Japanese festival foods from Yatai street food stalls, food trucks, and the Nikkei Cafe. Adults can unwind at the Beer & Sake Garden.
  • Unique Shopping: Discover unique finds at our new Japanese Pop Culture Market, a Japanese flea market, select Marketplace vendors, the Museum Shop, and the Japanese Bookstore.
  • Art & History: Dive deeper into Japanese Canadian heritage by exploring our museum exhibits and archives.
