WOVEN: Setsuko Piroche's Wonderland

Artist in attendance
The gallery will open after speeches starting at 1:00pm.
We are delighted to present the unique world of Setsuko Piroche (née Setsuko Hane), a colourful and diverse cross-cultural artist whose career spans more than 70 years, co-curated by Makiko Hara and Sherri Shinobu Kajiwara.
WOVEN illuminates a Japanese female post-war immigrant artist who created work for over 70years. Setsuko was born in Asakusa, Tokyo in 1932 and studied nihonga with Setsu Asakura. At the age of 26 she left the closed world of Japanese painting and departed for adventures in India and Australia. There she encountered a variety of cultures and met Pierre Piroche, a French adventurer and botanist. They immigrated to Canada in 1967.
This exhibition brings together more than 40 pieces of her unique artistic worldview, including three-dimensional textile works that were central to the Arts & Crafts Movement in the 1970s, suspensions, nihonga paintings, and illustrations for children books published in both Japanese and English. Please enjoy Setsuko's curious and mysterious world.
We are grateful for exhibition support from the BC Arts Council, the Province of BC, the Deux Mille Foundation, Michiko Sakata, Martine Reid, Beth Carter, and for conservation support from the Museum of Anthropology and Fraser Spafford Ricci Art & Archival Conservation Inc.
Exhibition continues to September 28, 2024. Special events, programming, and new surprises will be uploaded online at: centre.nikkeiplace.org/exhibits/setsuko-piroche/
