Karuta Workshops

Free Workshops

Sunday, November 16, 2025

Session 1: 1:00 - 2:00 PM

Session 2: 3:00 - 4:00 PM

Have you ever heard of Kyougi Karuta (competitive karuta)? This traditional Japanese card game is a fast-paced 1-on-1 competition that combines speed, memory, and poetry. It’s based on the Hyakunin Isshu, a classic anthology of 100 poems from the 13th century, and has gained popularity through the manga and anime Chihayafuru.

In this one-hour workshop, you’ll learn the basic rules of Kyougi Karuta and play your first matches on tatami mats. No experience or Japanese proficiency is required; everyone is welcome to join and play. We’ll provide everything you need, including Karuta cards in several versions (standard, hiragana, or romaji), so you can enjoy the game at your own pace. Come try something new, meet fellow players, and have fun!

No prior experience or Japanese proficiency is required. Everyone is welcome.

This is a free drop in class. No registration required. Join us in Kaede Room (2F) on November 16 at 1pm or 3pm.

Taking place during the Nikkei Craft Fair
