ichi-go ichi-e 一期一会: Guests From Japan Series:

Join Shuichiro & Yukiko Kuboki for an engaging, hands-on workshop exploring the traditional Tsugaru Shamisen.

This one-of-a-kind workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the rich sounds and techniques of this distinctive Japanese musical instrument, guided by acclaimed shamisen artists from Japan.

Workshop Outline:

  • Introduction to the Tsugaru shamisen
  • Understanding shamisen notation
  • Basic posture and techniques
  • Introduction to playing techniques
  • Demonstration: “Soran Bushi”
  • Hands-on practice and performance

Participants who own a shamisen are encouraged to bring their own instrument. If you don't, workshop instruments will be shared throughout the session.

No prior experience is necessary. This workshop is open to beginners and experienced players, for anyone interested in exploring Japanese culture through music.

About the Instructors

Shuichiro & Yukiko Kuboki

Born in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, Shuichiro Kuboki is an award-winning Tsugaru shamisen performer, composer, and instructor. He began playing the shamisen in his youth and went on to win the Ensemble Division of the National Tsugaru Shamisen Competition in 1987. That same year, he made his international debut in Canada and the United States through a Japan Foundation cultural exchange program. Shuichiro has performed throughout Japan and internationally, including in Asia and North America. He leads Shuichiro & Daichi, has appeared on Japanese television and in stage productions, and has published an instructional book on Tsugaru shamisen. In addition to the shamisen, he performs the sanshin, sharing the richness of traditional Japanese music with audiences around the world.

久保木 脩一朗（くぼき しゅういちろう） 津軽三味線奏者、作・編曲家。「脩一朗＆大地」リーダー。

1957年生まれ。母親の影響を受け、15歳の頃より津軽三味線に触れる。後に高橋脩次朗氏に師事。著名な民謡歌手や歌謡歌手のコンサートマスター、サポートメンバーとして30年以上にわたり国内外の第一線で芸を磨く。

1998年、伝統の枠にとらわれない邦楽の新たな可能性を追い求め、津軽三味線・尺八篠笛・和太鼓からなるユニット「脩一朗＆大地」を結成。2000年には国際交流基金の派遣事業により、パキスタン、ネパール、バングラデシュの3カ国で海外巡演を行い、喝采を浴びる。さらに2008年の結成10周年ツアーでは、G8洞爺湖サミットにてアメリカ合衆国大統領をはじめとする各国首脳陣の前で演奏を披露し、国際的に高い評価を得た。

メディアや舞台芸術の分野でも多大な足跡を残している。2004年公開の映画『オーバードライヴ』では津軽三味線音楽監督を務め、自身も出演。また、武田鉄矢氏主演の舞台『3年B組金八先生〜夏休みの宿題〜』（2003年明治座・2005年御園座）に出演した際は、海援隊のメンバーに三味線指導を行った。

2006年に『久保木脩一朗の津軽三味線教本』、2008年には『久保木脩一朗の津軽三味線名曲譜本集』をヤマハミュージックメディアより全国発売。2016年には自身初となるソロアルバム『絃-GEN-』をリリース。

現在は、五木ひろし氏や吉幾三氏など一流アーティストとの共演やソロ活動を続ける傍ら、自身の会「脩一朗会」を主宰し、作・編曲活動や後進の指導にも深く力を注いでいる。
