On the afternoon of March 16, 2024, over 140 guests gathered for the much-anticipated opening reception of WOVEN: Setsuko Piroche’s Wonderland. Curated by Makiko Hara and Sherri Shinobu Kajiwara, this exhibition takes you on a journey into the vibrant world of Setsuko Piroche, an artist whose legacy spans over seven decades. As attendees entered the gallery, they were transported into a realm of colour, texture, and imagination, where each artwork told a story of its own. Setsuko Piroche herself was in attendance, happy to greet old friends and guests. Her presence lent an intimate touch to the event, allowing attendees to celebrate with the artist behind the works.
The opening reception featured speeches from esteemed guests, including a welcome from Cecilia Point of the Musqueam Nation, Deputy Consul General Satomi Okagaki from the Consulate General of Japan, and the curators Makiko Hara and Sherri Shinobu Kajiwara. Flowers were presented to Setsuko from Michiko Sakata who initially proposed the exhibit.
Please enjoy Setsuko’s curious and mysterious world. The exhibit runs till September 28, 2024. Hours are Tue-Sat 10am-5pm, admission by donation. Guided tours and storytelling programs will take place on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month starting in June. Visit the exhibit webpage in late May for details. We are hoping to screen documentary filmmaker Alejandro Yoshizawa’s film towards the end of the exhibit.
