Have you ever heard of Kyougi Karuta (competitive karuta)? This traditional Japanese card game is a fast-paced 1-on-1 competition that combines speed, memory, and poetry. It’s based on the Hyakunin Isshu, a classic anthology of 100 poems from the 13th century, and has gained popularity through the manga and anime Chihayafuru.

Come try something new, meet fellow players, and have fun! No experience or Japanese proficiency is required; everyone is welcome to join and play. We’ll provide everything you need, including Karuta cards in several versions (standard, hiragana, or romaji), so you can enjoy the game at your own pace. Resources to learn karuta are available on the Vancouver Kyougi Karuta website: vancouverkaruta.com.

Important
- Bring a knee pad or small towel to protect your knees from the tatami mats
- A few days before each meetup (if you are a beginner) send a message to Vancouver Karuta to let them know which cards you know
- If you are bringing your own cards, please label them as yours
