Ask an Elder

Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre hosts hundreds of students each year. They visit us to learn about Japanese culture and Japanese Canadian history and heritage. Many of these students are lucky enough to meet one or more of our volunteer elders. Elders bring cultural knowledge and personal experiences to share with the next generation.

Aki Horii is one of our treasured guest speakers. His audience is often the same age as he was when interned in East Lillooet. He tells them that sharing his experiences with them is a catharsis. Now keeping safe in isolation, Aki wants to keep sharing his memories of growing up Japanese Canadian.

Watch some of Aki’s story in his Taiken video, and ask him a question.

Anyone can submit their own short video to ask a question in response to Aki’s video. Folks who are camera-shy or technology-shy can write in questions as well.
